I got to go to SXSW and here is what I did there

We’ve been away from the blog too long — lots of work means not enough time to reflect on it.

Trying to remedy that beginning today, with a link to my latest post at The Patterson Foundation’s New Media Journalism Initiative blog. I just got back from SXSW — yes, Rusty is jealous that I got to go! — where I spoke on a panel with the ever-fabulous Nicole Hollway of the St. Louis Beacon. Our panel was the provocatively titled “Philanthropy is Not the Future of Journalism,” and Nicole and I emptied our brains to share our different experiences with philanthropic funding and independent news sites.

While our experiences are different, our conclusion is the same: If you think foundation grants are going to provide you with a sustainable path to doing journalism, you need to sit down and have another think.
