Rusty Coats is president and co-founder of Coats2Coats, a consultancy that focuses on a media future that is participatory, profitable and mobile. His current and recent clients include the Corporation for Public Broadcasting; The Patterson Foundation; ScribbleLive; the Capital Times, St. Louis Public Radio as well as a number of mobile startup companies.
He also serves as the Executive Director of the Local Media Consortium, a strategic partnership of leading local media companies representing more than 800 daily newspapers and over 200 major local broadcast outlets in some of the best markets in the nation. He helps its members maximize multi-faceted partnership with Google, Yahoo!, Monster and other emerging partners.
He is the architect of the Super Camp publisher mentoring program for Block by Block and the Community Journalism Executive Training (CJET) program, which has mentored nearly 50 independent publishers in business acumen and long-term sustainability.
Rusty has worked in interactive media since 1993, driving audience and revenue for such news companies as McClatchy, Media General and E.W. Scripps. He served as Director of New Media for Frank N. Magid Associates, consulting with a wide range of media companies in North America and Europe to develop interactive strategies.
Rusty holds a bachelor’s degree in journalism and English from Indiana University. In 2005, he was named Online Innovator of the Year by his peers in the Newspaper Association of America. He is also author of the novel, “Out of Touch.”
